Before trading any market, it helps to know how its orders actually meet. Do they all flow to one central venue, or travel between many dealers?
The answer decides who sets the price, how transparent it is and what protects you if something goes wrong.
In a centralized market, every order goes to one exchange, such as the New York Stock Exchange. There is one order book and one official price, visible to everyone at the same moment.
Buyers and sellers don't need to trust each other. They trust the exchange.
Exchanges are tightly regulated and use a clearing house that stands between buyer and seller. If one side fails to pay, the clearing house makes sure the trade still settles.
This is a major reason listed shares and futures are considered transparent and secure.
In a decentralized market there is no single exchange. Banks, dealers and brokers trade directly with one another, known as over the counter (OTC). Forex works this way, so quotes can differ very slightly between providers.
Decentralized markets trade around the clock and offer more flexibility in size and access. The trade-off is that no exchange guarantees every transaction, so the quality and regulation of the broker you trade through matter much more.
A centralized market suits you when a single, transparent price and exchange protection matter more than flexibility.
Buying listed shares to hold is a typical example. Trading hours are fixed, but pricing and settlement are clear.
A decentralized market suits you when access and flexibility matter most: trading 24 hours a day, in small sizes, across many instruments.
Forex and most CFDs fit here, as long as you trade through a regulated provider.
