Every order makes a trade-off. You can get filled immediately at whatever price is available, or you can insist on a specific price and accept that you might not be filled at all.
Neither is better. What matters is choosing deliberately, based on what the trade needs.
A market order says: fill me now, at the best price available. You are almost certain to get into the trade, but the exact price is not guaranteed. In a fast market it can differ from what you saw.
A limit order says: fill me only at this price or better. A buy limit sits below the current price and a sell limit sits above it. You control the price, but if the market never reaches your level, nothing happens.
A stop-loss closes your position automatically if price reaches a level you set. It exists for one reason: to cap your loss before emotion talks you into holding a losing trade.
Most well-planned trades use more than one order type. A common combination: enter with a market or limit order, then attach a stop-loss for protection and a limit order to take profit.
